CALLAWAY, VA :: With the forecast at 60% for rain on Saturday and with rain sweeping through the area on Friday evening and night as well, the decision was made to move the season opening race to Monday, May 27th Memorial Day.
Franklin County Speedway was set to get off to a whole new start on Saturday, May 11th but Mother Nature had other plans with heavy rains moving through the region during the week leading up to the race and another storm coming through on race weekend. With the infield at the track not being fully paved, the decision was made not to move forward with the season opener but to move the race to Monday, May 27th which is Memorial Day.
“Man, it’s tough being all geared up for the season to start and then getting shut down by weather,” said track promoter, Langley Austin. “We’ve been working non-stop since putting this deal together on April 18th, at the track with plenty of stuff to fix and clean up to be ready and trying to promote the race, round up drivers, talk to fans and so much more. It’s a huge let down not to race but everything happens for a reason.”
With the rain out, Moonshine Capital Promotions, who leased the track for this season, is hoping to add an additional date to what was an 11-race schedule but will have to take a long hard look at other tracks schedules and not step on anyone else’s races.
“We worked hard not to step on area tracks schedules with the original schedule we put together, so if we’re going to make this race we’ll have to sit down and see what gaps there still are in the schedule. For now we’ll just get geared up for the remaining 10 dates on the schedule and hopefully bring the “Good Ole Days” back to Franklin County Speedway.”
