CALLAWAY, VA :: The month of March is about to get busy at Franklin County Speedway as cars hit the track for the first time in 2014 and track management gears up for the new season.
Sunday March 2nd the sounds and smells of race cars will fill the air at Franklin County Speedway for the first open practice of the season from1pm to 4:30pm. It’ll be the first time cars have hit the track in 2014 after arctic temperatures, snow and ice have kept any cars from practicing.
“It’s been a long winter,” said track promoter Langley Austin. “Maybe it’s just me but this winter seems to have been dragging on for far too long. Winter just depresses people and now that the weather is about to break it’s exciting to know cars will be on the track as soon as this weekend.”
Following this Sunday’s practice session the track will be available for rent during the week but won’t hold another open practice session for the next couple of weeks as track staff works to get the track ready for the new season. Track management and many of the tracks drivers and teams will be attending the MDA Car Show at the Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, VA March 7th-9th to promote the upcoming season.
Local Late Model favorite Bobby Gillespie will have his Chevrolet Camaro race car on display in the Roanoke Civic Center and track management will have a booth setup to promote the season, share the 2014 schedule and a raffle for free tickets all weekend long.
“We’re looking forward to the MDA Car Show. It’ll be a great promotional opportunity for the track and it’ll be great to see many new and old fans as well as potential new fans. It’s also great to have Bobby Gillespie bring his car to display and I’m sure the people attending will love it.”
The busy month of March will continue on with a Volunteer Track Clean-up day the following weekend. Drivers, teams and fans are encouraged to come out to the track and help us prepare the facility for the upcoming season on Saturday March 15th. Free food and refreshments will be served to all participants.
The busy month of March will conclude with the first of three controlled open practice sessions on Saturday March 29th from 11am to 4pm. We will also have many members of our staff on hand to put any cars that wish to go through pre-season safety inspection before the season gets underway. This will save us time on the weekend of the season opener as all cars must complete a safety inspection in order to compete in any race this season.
“We want to have our staff more organized this season and we’ve got a lot of new people that will help make our staff better in 2014. This will also help all our racers by getting their cars inspected before the season starts so they’ll know what they need to fix going forward and they can be better prepared.”
